As required by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC), Jefferson Utilities tests its water meters on a rotating ten-year cycle. The water meter servicing your property is now due to be replaced. In order to do so, Jefferson Utilities (JU) personnel will need unimpeded access to the location of your water meter, typically located in the basement.
While replacing the water meter, JU personnel will also survey your water system for connections that could possibly contaminate the water in your home and/or the water distribution system within the city limits. The purpose of this survey is to ensure everyone in your home and in our community has safe, clean drinking water by eliminating points of possible contamination. This site survey, as well as correction of any cross connections identified, is mandated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Some examples of water connections that will be checked are outside hose spigots, water softeners, laundry tubs and boilers. There is no fee for this survey. As a convenience for our customers, Jefferson Utilities will provide, at no cost to you, the indoor and outdoor hose bib (spigot) vacuum breakers necessary to fix any simple cross connection issues you may have. Costs above and beyond the use of these vacuum breakers are the responsibility of the property owner/manager and may require the services of a professional plumber. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions about the above services. If you are a tenant, your landlord will also receive this letter.
Prior to our visit, please ensure that the shut-off valve by the water meter is in working condition. We will need to exercise it when we arrive. If it doesn’t function or breaks, you may need the services of a professional plumber. Jefferson Utilities does not assume responsibility for a broken shut-off valve.
