Annual Water Quality Report

How often is our water tested?

Jefferson Utilities takes daily samples of the water and tests the levels of chlorine, fluoride and polyphosphates. We also take bacterial samples nine times a month which are sent to the State of Wisconsin Laboratory for testing.

Why is my water rusty?

  • When the Water Dept. flushes all the hydrants twice a year in order to clean out the system it can cause rust to show up in our customers' water. Flushing is done in the Spring and Fall. The dates of the flushing are published in the Daily Jefferson County Union. We urge our customers not to do laundry on those days because of the rust that might occur.
  • When a new water main is being connected to our system, as in a new subdivision, it can cause a "stir" in the system.
  • When the Fire Dept. has opened hydrants for fighting fires.
  • If you are experiencing rust at other times, please call our office (674-7711) and we will certainly investigate.
